We had a great discussion today about charities that are important to us. Thank you to those families who took some time to talk about this at home. If you did not have time yesterday, don't worry - we'll be revisiting this idea on Friday and again next week. So far the students generated this list:
We are beginning to investigate how we can make a difference in our community with BMO's Entrepreneurial Adventure program. One of our first tasks is to decide on a charity that we would like to support. We have asked students to have a discussion at home about a charity that is meaningful to them. Please take some time to have a discussion about a charity that is important to your family. Today we discussed how charities support/benefit different areas like the environment, people or animals. We also discussed how we must choose a registered charity with a charity tax #. You can check to see if your charity has a tax # by looking on the info page of most websites. Tomorrow we will make a list together and start discussing how we can narrow it down. Thanks for your support!
Tomorrow, Copperfield School will be participating in Pink Shirt Day. We encourage you to visit the website and have a discussion at home.
pinkshirtday.ca/ At school, we will be having a discussion around this topic, as well as participating in team building activities. We will take the pledge together as well. Don't forget to wear a pink shirt (or make yourself a pink badge to wear)! Here is a snippet from the website: Through our campaign this year, we encourage everyone to “Make Nice”. We all have the capacity to be kind and compassionate, and our slogan acts as a friendly reminder that no matter what our differences, being nice is always a choice worth making. Let's show our spirit and that Copperfield has heart! On the afternoon of Wednesday, February 22nd, students will be involved in some exciting team-building challenges in multi-aged groups throughout the school building (or ‘Big Friendly Groups’). In connection to the Pink Shirt Day campaign to end bullying, students will have the opportunity to build relationships throughout the school, while participating in activities that encourage us to be kind and compassionate.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/7_8/light_shadows.shtml Have you ever wondered how authors turn their ideas and stories into books? How a graphic novel comes together? How illustrators can capture a story with a picture? The Calgary Young Writers' Conference has the answers to these questions and much, much more! The Calgary Young Writer’s Conference is coming to Calgary on Saturday, April 22, 2017 and we have a few spots available for students interested in attending. This is an all day event and students are able to register for a writing and an art session or two writing sessions. Parents are required to drop off and pick up their child at the designated spot and time (Mrs. Dorish will be at the site all day with students). To view the variety of speakers and workshops being offered, please go to http://www.calgaryywc.com/ and click on the ‘speakers’ tab. The cost per student is $50 and is non-refundable. If this is an opportunity you would like your child to participate in, please confirm by email to Mrs. Dorish (cyd[email protected]) no later than Feb. 13th.
As a class, we have decided to give everyone the opportunity to give out cards on Valentine's Day; however, if you bring them, please bring them for the whole class. There are 25 students in our class! We will use our Copperfield bags as mailboxes, so please ensure your child brings theirs to school on this day. We will also be participating in a Friendship Walk to Copper Pond with the grade 2s. Once students get back to school, they will enjoy a small treat and hot chocolate in our classroom. If you are able to donate cupcakes/cookies or hot chocolate to this event, please email Mrs. Young. Thank you.
[email protected] Our efforts to achieve personal bests for our Copperfield Official Grand Opening (on Ground Hog Day) culminated in a memorable and WONDERful whole school show! We have received many emails and accolades about our talented students. I know the rehearsals leading up the big show were plenty, but they paid off. Way to go grade 4s! HUGE ROUND OF APPLAUSE! Weren't we lucky to have a photo taken with Councillor Shane Keating? He even came on Friday to visit us, but he didn't know you were off for a PD Day. He promised to come again when you are in school. We have a photo to prove it!February is a month of thinking of others and being grateful. Next week, on Tuesday, February 14th in the afternoon, we hope to have a Friendship walk around the pond, a treat to warm us up and to do a Random Act of Kindness for another class (or a few). We are generating ideas as a class. We will be focusing on friendship and kindness, instead of Valentines Day. However, we realize students often like to choose and give out cards. We will use our Copperfield tote bags as 'mailboxes' and if students are wanting to give out Valentines they are more than welcome to. We just ask that all students are included (there are 25 students) and students will have to generate their own class list of names (we won't be publishing it). It is suggested, that the cards be addressed to a classmate and include a 'from' name to make the giving easier.
