"When a member of Canada’s Armed Forces falls in combat, his or her final journey is along the Highway of Heroes from CFB Trenton to the Coroner’s Office in Toronto. We are planting 117,000 trees along this 170km stretch of highway to honour each of Canada’s war dead. Every Canadian can be a part of this historic tribute. Look at the names on the cenotaph in YOUR community. Help us to honour those from YOUR community and ensure their spirit lives on in a living tribute!!" - taken directly from Highwya of Heroes website (found here). We will take late orders! But, get them in soon or you might miss out! PHOTOS WERE DUE OCT. 17! Wishtree by Katherine ApplegateSince Sept. 26th I have been reading the novel, Wishtree, to the class. The author states several times that this is 'not a fairytale'. There is a purpose for reading this fictitious book (a story). Red is an old (216 rings old) tree who has witnessed a lot about humans over the years. Red is friends with Bongo the crow and many forest animals. Samar the new girl also finds Red, and its creatures, her only friends. Something shocking has happened in the story! Grade 4 students, share with your parents the devastating event. As readers, we know that this is one of the main problems of the book and now we begin our journey of learning even more. As a teacher, I have carefully chosen this book so that we may all hear a heartfelt story from the perspective of nature (a tree's view), make connections about things that sadly happen around the world, to think deeply and critically, and to learn from this book! This is a chance for us to learn about who we are in this world, and the importance of being responsible, accepting members of the world. We are learning more about how our footprint/legacy can impact others.
We are working on strategies to add and critical thinking in MATH. Many students finished our questions. There are a few who needed more time. If you needed more time, take a piece of paper from home and finish these questions. Remember to show your work and take each column at a time (ones, tens, hundreds): If your initials are: RK, MI, CU, TH or JD you have to finish the questions above! I will be collecting your finished work Friday morning! Come prepared. You have a half day tomorrow! We will be working on our Digital Scavenger Hunt (slide show with our partners from the other classes)!Monday, October 16th is a PD Day = No school for you!
Today we began a Waste in Our World, science project. Each student got to choose one or two students to work with. Each group is trying to think of a problem that impacts our world and begin to find facts to help come up with a solution! CLICK THE BUTTON BELOW to check out the science task: |
